What's the Difference Between a Social Worker and a Psychotherapist?

For anyone experiencing mental health challenges, finding the right professional to trust is often easier said than done. You may know that a psychotherapist provides mental health support, but did you know that a social worker can also help?

What is a Psychotherapist?

A registered psychotherapist (RP) specializes in providing counselling through talk-based therapy, with the goal of improving or maintaining mental health and well-being.

Types of Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Helps people change the way they think and behave. Usually used for anxiety and depression.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy: Adapted for people who feel very intense emotions or have severe depression.

EMDR: Helps your brain reprocess negative memories so they no longer cause the same amount of pain.

Mindfulness: Maintaining moment-by-moment awareness of thoughts, body sensations, feelings, and surroundings.

A registered psychotherapist can conduct assessments and provide treatment but cannot diagnose or prescribe medication. A psychologist can diagnose but not prescribe. A psychiatrist can both diagnose and prescribe medication.

What is a Social Worker?

Social workers provide counselling, therapy, and other social services. A registered social worker on an online therapy platform is qualified to provide the same kind of therapy services as a psychotherapist, treating anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma, and more.

Areas of Social Work

Mental Health: Social workers provide mental health services and may be the only licensed provider available in some areas.

Substance Abuse: Group or individual therapy, family counselling, and case management.

Child Welfare: Protecting children from harm and creating safe environments.

Which One Should I Choose?

Consider your insurance coverage, as policies specify which practitioners you’re covered for. If insurance isn’t a factor, look into each therapist’s specialties and experience to find the best fit for your needs.
